Thorens was a maker of phonographs, music boxes and cigarette lighters establised by Hermann Thorens in St Croix, Switzerland in 1883. Various models of cigarette lighter were produced from 1913 to 1964, but now the company is only producing phonograph equipment. Their most sought after lighter models are of the 1920s to 1930s era.
In 1883, the Thorens family business was first registered in Sainte-Croix (Ste-Croix), Vaud, Switzerland by Hermann Thorens. An initial producer of musical boxes and clock movements (which they were still producing in the 1950s), they started producing Edison-type phonographs in 1903, followed a few years later by horn gramophones, which remained in the range for several decades until they were replaced by turntables. Meanwhile, thay also also started producing harmonica and lighters.
Between 1913 and 1964 Thorens manufactured more than 5 million pocket lighters to help establish the Thorens identity worldwide. The most notable lighter they produced was the button actuated "automatic lighter".
