The Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo's 6th-generation home console. Codenamed "Dolphin" during development, the console was released in 2001 in Japan, North America, Europe, and in 2002 in Australia and is the successor to the Nintendo 64. The GameCube competed with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The discs are in a miniDVD-based format, but the system was not designed to play full-sized DVDs or audio CDs unlike its competitors, and mainly focused on gaming instead. The system features a more compact design with four controller ports, a controller with an ergonomic design, small but large-capacity discs, connectivity with the Game Boy Advance and a form of online play. In 2006, it was succeeded by Wii, which also features ports for most GameCube hardware as well as compatibility for its software on original models.

The console was released in four colors: Indigo, Jet Black, and later a limited edition Platinum system and finally, in Japan only, a Spice Orange console was released. The original price was $199 in 2001, around $310 in today's money (2021).

Like the Nintendo 64, the GameCube features four built-in controller ports. On the top of the console are three buttons: Power, Reset, and Open. On the top of the disc cover is a name plate, which can be removed and replaced on early model consoles, and in front of the cover is an LED to indicate the console is powered on. Opening the disc cover is the laser lens and the disc release button, which is where games are placed and can be pressed to remove the disc. On the back of the console is a handle, which allows for it to be conveniently carried, as well as the DC input for the DOL-002 AC Adapter, and the video output port(s). On the bottom of the console are three expansion ports for add-ons: one hi-speed port and two serial ports.

GameCube DOL-101

In 2004, Nintendo began to release a newer model of the Nintendo GameCube, DOL-101, which featured several differences from the original version to cut costs and improve the existing hardware:

  •     DOL-101 consoles do not have a "Digital AV Out" port
  •     Serial Port 2 was removed
  •     The nameplate on the disc cover cannot be removed
  •     The GameCube firmware was updated
  •     The AC adapter is 48 watts rather than 46
  •     Platinum DOL-101 consoles feature black plastic over the rear ports rather than platinum

Reception of the GameCube was mixed. The console was praised for its controller, extensive software library and high-quality games, but was criticized for its exterior design and lack of features. Nintendo sold 21.74 million GameCube units worldwide, much less than anticipated, before the console was discontinued in 2007.
