The Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Super NES (also called SNES and Super Nintendo) is a 16-bit video game console that was released by Nintendo in North America, Europe, Australasia, and Brazil between 1990 and 1993. In Japan and Southeast Asia, the system is called the Super Family Computer, Super Famicom or SFC for short. In South Korea, it is known as the Super Comboy and was distributed by Hyundai Electronics. Although each version is essentially the same, several forms of regional lockout prevent direct compatibility. The SNES was Nintendo's second home console, following the NES. The console introduced advanced graphics and sound capabilities that compensated for its relatively slow CPU, compared with other consoles at the time. Additionally, the system's support for numerous enhancement chips (which shipped as part of certain game cartridges) helped to keep it competitive in the marketplace.
What did you have to fork out for a SNES? Nintendo released the SNES, a redesigned version of the Super Famicom, in North America for US$199 (equivalent to $397 in 2021). It began shipping in limited quantities on August 23, 1991, with an official nationwide release date of September 9, 1991. The SNES was released in the UK and Ireland in April 1992 for £150 (equivalent to £270 in 2021).
Most of the PAL region versions of the console use the Japanese Super Famicom design, except for labeling and the length of the joypad leads. The Playtronic SNES in Brazil, although PAL-M, uses the North American design. Both the NES and SNES were released in Brazil in 1993 by Playtronic, a joint venture between the toy company Estrela and consumer electronics company Gradiente.
The console was a global success, becoming the best-selling system of the 16-bit era despite its relatively late start and the fierce competition it faced in North America from the Sega Genesis console. The Super Nintendo remained popular well into the 32-bit era, and although all support for the console has been dropped, it continues to be popular among fans, collectors and emulation enthusiasts, some of whom are still making "homebrew" ROM images.
