Sega SG-1000 for sale on eBay:

The Sega SG-1000 (Sega Game 1000) is a video game console with hardware close to MSX1s, the main difference being the 4 channel mono sound chip, which was provided by Texas Instruments. The console was developed due to the downturn in revenue from arcades. It was Sega's first attempt at a home gaming console. It was released in July 1983 in Japan, and was only sold in select markets in Asia and Oceania, and in limited numbers in Italy and Spain, with an estimated 2 million units sold worldwide. While the system fared better than many of its rivals, its main market in Japan would be dominated by Nintendo's Famicom consoles. The machine launched on the same day as the Nintendo Famicom, and was on the back foot from the start. Nintendo had put in place agreements with third party publishers that licensed them to produce games only for their machine.

The core of the Sega SG-1000 was based around a NEC clone of the 8-bit Z80, a 16-color 256x192 video processor from TI (Texas Instruments). The system internally is based on off the shelf parts for cheapness, some of the chips came from the Colecovision and even by the mid 1980s, clone makers began to produce 2-in-1 systems that could run games for both consoles. The Sega SG-1000 was released in several forms, including the SC-3000 computer and the SG-1000 II released in 1984, which was a redesigned version of the console, where the rear expansion port was moved to the front of the console (used for the SK-1100 keyboard) and the controllers were updated so they looked similar to that of the Famicom. The Sega SG-1000 and the SC-3000 model both support a library of 76 cartridge games and 29 Sega My Card games.

  • RF-output
  • SG-1000 cartridge slot
  • 1 expansion slot (for Keyboard SK-1100, etc)
  • 1 joystick port for joystick 2 (DE-9 type), joystick 1 can't be removed
  • Power supply input (DC +9V, 7.7W)

The console's library is not extensive, but has good takes on Sega's arcade heritage such as:

  • Super Monaco GP
  • Flicky
  • Congo Bongo

Third party games such as H.E.R.O. and Bombjack can be sought out too, but many of the Sega SG-1000 titles now are expensive, and difficult to find. Sale of both the SG-1000 consoles and the SC-3000 came to an end worldwide in 1986. Sega had begun to focus its efforts on the Sega Mark III which had been introduced in October 1985. Game titles continued to be released by Sega up until early 1987.
